How the Georgia Capitol’s New Photography Rules Affect Engagement & Wedding Portraits
The Georgia State Capitol has become one of those must-shoot locations. But starting January 1, 2026, new rules will significantly change how photographers can use the Capitol as a backdrop. These guidelines were introduced by the Georgia Building Authority (GBA) to help balance public access, safety, and the historic nature of the building.
What’s Changing? (2026 Photography Rules)
Scheduled Sessions Only
• Professional photography sessions inside the Georgia Capitol will require reservations ahead of time.
• Shoots cannot take place during the legislative session or any special session of the General Assembly.
This means you’ll need to plan and book early particularly if you’re planning an engagement or wedding portrait session inside the building.
Limited Time Windows
When the legislature isn’t in session, professional sessions are only allowed during specific times:
• Monday: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
• Wednesday: 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m
The new rules also set clear limits inside the building:
✔ No flash photography
✔ No large props, signs, or balloons
✔ No blocking stairs, hallways, or elevators
✔ No wardrobe changes outside restroom stalls
✔ Cannot move furniture without written approval
How This Affects Wedding & Engagement Shoots
Plan Ahead
Since time slots are limited and reservations will be required, make sure you or your couples secure a slot early especially for busy engagement or wedding photography seasons.
Client Communication
Set expectations early with couples explain the new rules and why the shoot may need to be at a specific time (e.g., early Monday or late Wednesday).
